When looking at business intelligence platforms, Tableau has maintained its spot as a leader in data visualization and business intelligence. There’s no denying its robust reporting capabilities, customizable dashboards, and advanced analytics, but what if the Tableau infrastructure could be used to accelerate decision intelligence?

Familiar challenges with Tableau and other BI tools

Businesses are increasingly seeking faster, more real-time intelligence that is contextualized to their use cases. Data teams have attempted to address many of these requirements using Tableau but still run into familiar issues:

  • Too many dashboards. The data team ends up building and managing too many dashboards (we’ve seen 150+ dashboards in the supply department of one large tech firm).
  • Increased ad hoc work. Business teams require summarized high value insights or metrics that exist across dashboards and not in one place, creating significant ad hoc work for data teams.
  • Ever-evolving requirements. To address proactive delivery, data teams configure automated reports from Tableau to users. However, these are not effective, and requirements keep evolving.
  • Data teams spend too much time in data preparation and integration for use cases that are not required for short periods of time.
  • Challenging calculations. Creating complex calculations or performing advanced analytics (machine learning) in Tableau can be challenging.
  • Technology debt. Different dashboards start relying on different calculations and pipelines, leading to significant tech debt.
  • Weak feedback loop. The feedback loop is weak and therefore, there is no clarity on which dashboard is useful or not.
  • Costly business intelligence ecosystem. The business intelligence ecosystem becomes costly due to multiple applications and dashboards needing to be leveraged.

Each of these challenges starts to add up, especially when enabling teams to make data-backed decisions.

What if we could add a nudge layer to Tableau that drives decision insights for specific use cases and improves the utility of the existing BI ecosystem?

Building a SynthBI Nudge unit for accelerating decision insights

SynthBI, is an intelligence delivery platform built by Bloom AI. It includes two components: A Control Tower that connects to Tableau APIs and aggregates the relevant data and metrics and a Nudge Library where summarized reports or ML-based alerts (Nudges) can be configured for different decision use cases. These nudges are then proactively delivered to users based on work context.

Use Case Example: The data and analytics team of a large investment management company supports the sales team with Tableau dashboards for data-driven insights. They’ve created dashboards that provide insights on campaigns, pipelines and deals, product performance, and financial performance. The sales team accesses the dashboards occasionally to get information on specific clients or product performance.

The business is highly competitive, and they are trying to optimize how the sales team receives more contextual and timely insights. Some of these insights included performance insights, marketing signals, opportunity alerts based on prospect engagement scoring, risk-based alerts when the client’s portfolio is not performing, when the client is not actively engaging, and thematic intent signals from client segments. The data strategy team assessed almost 20 use cases for various groups within the sales team.

For almost all these use cases, the focus is on nudging the sales team at the critical moment of action (right time, right place).

Benefits of building a nudge system on Tableau:

  • Improved Decision Making: By subtly guiding decision-makers towards more beneficial choices, nudges can lead to better business decisions.
  • Increased Efficiency: Nudges can streamline processes by highlighting the most relevant data and insights, reducing the time spent on analysis.
  • Customized Experiences: Nudges can be personalized based on user needs and preferences, making reports more relevant and effective.
  • Enhanced User Engagement: Nudges can increase user engagement and interpretation by making reports more user-friendly and intuitive.
  • Behavioral Insights: Nudges help build an understanding of employee behavior, leading to tailored reports and strategies that resonate more with the team.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Implementing nudges is relatively low-cost but can lead to significant improvements in outcomes, providing a high return on investment.
  • Data-Driven Culture Promotion: Nudges can promote a culture of relying on data for decision-making rather than intuition or habits.
